The Miss Deaf Iowa Pageant is an important part of the Iowa Association of the Deaf. The first pageant was in 1977, and since that time, it has given many young deaf and hard of hearing women the opportunity to develop their scholarship, leadership, and citizenship with an emphasis on public-speaking skills, performing skills, community participation, poise, self-confidence, and their ability to think on their feet. Miss Deaf Iowa keeps her title for two years, and in that time span, she travels all over this state, speaking and performing before a wide variety of audiences. Most importantly, Miss Deaf Iowa represents the Iowa Association of the Deaf (IAD).
Rachel Marie Nemmers, a recent graduate from West High School and Walnut Ridge Baptist Academy, both located in Waterloo, was crowned Miss Deaf Iowa 2005-2007 on August 5, 2005. Rachel is currently attending Faith Baptist Bible College in Ankeny majoring in Biblical Studies. Her platform presentation was entitled: "You Can Do It!" Her talent was a skit entitled: "The Life of a Gum". Rachel is available for appearances at special events, meetings, gatherings, etc. If you are interested in having Rachel attend your organization/club's events, please contact the pageant director, Jessica Olsen-Dunbar.
